The BA (Hons) Game Art course at University Campus Oldham offers a dynamic and industry-focused route for aspiring creatives keen to enter the world of game art, concept art and beyond. Delivered in partnership with the University of Lancashire, our programme is tailored to provide you with the creative, technical, and professional skills needed for a successful career.

With our smaller group sizes, you benefit from more personalised teaching and direct contact with experienced tutors, allowing you to develop your skills in a supportive and collaborative environment. 

Course Content

Year 1 

  • Introduction to Concept Design: Learn and practice a variety of creative concept art skills 

  • Creativity and Context for Games: Discover more about the industry and how to apply best practice to your own work 

  • 3D Modelling and Digital Art for Games: Develop professional techniques in 3D modelling and digital art for games 

  • Drawing for Design: Develop a range of traditional visual communication skills to inform your approaches to game art. 

 

Year 2 

  • Heading into the Games Industry: Research and apply the skills required for entry into the games and wider digital creative industry 

  • Game Art Pipeline: Further develop your skills in 3D modelling digital techniques and rendering processes, including workflow methodology 

  • Realising Game Engine Potential: Develop your knowledge of contemporary game engine capabilities 

  • Character Design: Develop skills to design characters using appropriate digital technologies. 

 

Year 3 

  • Professional Portfolio Development: Produce a body of work that showcases your skills and abilities, aligning it with industry practice and expectations 

  • Honours Project: Define a challenging project that targets the skills required for your chosen career pathway. 

Assessment

All modules are assessed on practical and written coursework performance – there are no exams. An example would be a body of work as evidence, demonstrating your skills in research, ideation, development and production of final creative outcomes. Work will also including formative critical comments and summative reflections. 

Work Experience

Industry professionals and alumni are regularly invited into the studios as guest practitioners to deliver lectures and workshops. There are also opportunities for external visits to locations relevant to your future employment aspirations. 

You are encouraged to seek out placements and work experience and are supported with this as part of your studies. 

Pathways

Following successful completion of this course, you can progress to a career in game art, concept art, and a range of related 3D and digital art roles, including product and architectural visualisation, VFX/CGI for film and TV, animation, 3D sculpting, technical art, and user interface design. Further study at Master’s level is another pathway open to graduates of the Game Art course. 

Entry Requirements

96 points at A2, for example: 

BTEC Extended Diploma: MMM 

BTEC Diploma: DD 

Pass Access Course: 96 UCAS points 

International Baccalaureate Diploma: Pass including 96 points from Higher Level subjects 

T Level: P (C+) 

 

And 

 

GCSEs: 5 at grade C/4 including Maths and English or equivalent. 

 

And  

 

Successful portfolio interview
