Bright futures and a brass band: UCO celebrates Graduation 2025

The Class of 2025 were celebrated in style at this year’s University Campus Oldham (UCO) Graduation Ceremony, held on Friday 17th October at Queen Elizabeth Hall.

The day began with a vibrant procession through Oldham town centre, led by Mr Wilson’s Second Liners, a high-energy brass band bringing a burst of colour, sound and celebration to the streets. Their unique mix of New Orleans spirit and 90s club classics set the perfect tone for a day dedicated to achievement and pride.

Graduates, families, friends and staff then gathered at Queen Elizabeth Hall for the formal ceremony, where Susan Holden, Assistant Principal of HE and Higher Skills at University Campus Oldham, reflected on the success of the day:  “Graduation 2025 was a fantastic celebration of the hard work, determination and ambition shown by all our graduates.

“It was wonderful to see everyone come together to share in their success, from our students and staff to the families and friends who supported them throughout their journey.

“The atmosphere during the ceremony was full of pride and positivity, and I wish every graduate the very best for their bright futures ahead.”

The ceremony also recognised the outstanding achievements of several members of the UCO community.

The Alumni Award 2025 was presented to Jade Sapseid, who graduated in 2024 with a first-class BSc (Hons) in Health and Social Care. Since returning to study in 2021, Jade has built a remarkable career in mental health and now works as a Living Well Project Manager at Tameside, Oldham and Glossop Mind, leading three teams that deliver vital local support.

As Vicky Ford, Careers and Graduate Outcomes Officer, shared: “Jade immersed herself in learning and used her placements to progress from volunteer to paid employee and then into management before she had even graduated. Her success will send positive ripples throughout our borough; she is a true success story.”

Two Honorary Fellowships were also awarded this year.

Jessica Taylor, Television Producer, received her Fellowship in recognition of her dedication and contribution to the creative industries. Jessica began her journey at Oldham College in 1989, completing her Hairdressing qualifications before going on to work on some of the UK’s most iconic TV productions, including Coronation Street, Life on Mars and Britain’s Got Talent.

Lucy Lees, Chief Executive at Mahdlo Youth Zone, was recognised for her years of commitment to the Oldham community. As one of Mahdlo’s founding members, Lucy has dedicated nearly two decades to supporting young people to reach their potential, helping to make Mahdlo a vital part of Oldham’s youth offer.

Other award winners included Joshua Bellot (Outstanding Contribution to Student Voice and the UCO Community 2025) and Tasnim Masuma (Outstanding Academic Achievement 2025).

Following the ceremony, graduates and guests enjoyed a celebratory reception, a fitting end to a day filled with pride, joy and well-earned success.
