Paige chose to study at University Campus Oldham for a number of reasons:
“As an older learner, I needed to study closer to home. Also, the way that the course is delivered is very different from standard universities. UCO offered a more hands-on approach, with tutors who really care,” she says.
For Paige, the Education and Early Years BA (Hons) provided many highlights, including meeting new people and developing academically – but the best part of the course was the placement.
“I was given the opportunity to complete my placement at a Pupil Referral Unit,” Paige says. “My tutors were supportive of me taking on a placement that was out of the norm for my course, so that I could follow my interests.”
This led Paige to her current role as Student and Volunteer Coordinator at Positive Steps – a position she found with the help of UCO support staff.
“I found this job through volunteering at Positive Steps, as advised by the Careers and Guidance team at UCO,” Paige says.
“As part of my role, I deliver safeguarding training to all new staff and volunteers. My time at UCO really helped with this, as I learned a lot about safeguarding – and developed my presentation skills – during my degree.”
Paige describes UCO’s support and opportunities as “unmatched.” She says: “I felt supported by not only my tutors, but by the support staff: the Library team, who will help you to find the perfect resources; the Academic Skills team, who supported me in taking my work to the next level; and Careers, who helped to find placements and gave advice on what to do after graduation.”
