“I chose University Campus Oldham because it’s a quieter, supportive institution which offers degrees from some of the biggest universities in the North, including UCLan and University of Huddersfield.”
Lyon had aspired to learn about the complexities of game art for a long time, so ‘loved’ his time on the BA (Hons) Digital Art for 3D Games and Media course. “To do this in smaller lectures and receive individual support suited me and made the experience even better.
“My lecturers were both very supportive and actively provided me with the fundamentals I’ll need to advance my career: how to make a 3D model look amazing from an artistic perspective, and the technical limitations of Real-Time technologies when balancing beauty and optimisation when assets are placed in a game engine.”
After graduating with first class honours, Lyon first secured a job at Fujitsu and has now moved onto a role at Manchester Metropolitan University as their Technical Officer for 3D & Immersive Technology.
“I’m immensely proud of this, as the Games industry is a difficult scene to enter. It’s so gratifying to be working in a job that matches the degree I obtained, in a field I’m passionate about.
“My career ambition is to become a 3D artist at a major games studio.”
Lyon highly recommends UCO to those looking for a quieter study setting offering more intimate support. “If you find the idea of (or have found) bigger universities overwhelming, UCO offers the perfect balance of getting a degree which matters to you with removing the anxiety of attending in a busier environment, so you can focus on achieving the best grades possible.”
