On the FdA Performance I explored a variety of styles – including through a performance called ‘Come with Me’, in which students took audience members on a guided journey of UCO and uncovered mysteries and obstacles along the way.
For the BA Top-Up Performance course, I created my own Training Score by combining two Performance components, demonstrated through movement and determination.
Throughout the PGCE, I delivered drama sessions exploring character development and the background story of a specific topic. I also created and organised an accessible Scheme of Work to help students with different learning abilities take part, and prepare them for the school production.
I worked as a Storyteller at Oldham Library and across the borough, and took part in the Summer Reading Challenge, which gave me opportunities to use alternative and effective approaches to storytelling. I used homemade props, which was fun and made my performances more inclusive and engaging for people of all ages.
As well as this, I enjoyed working in libraries across Oldham – and making lifelong friends.
Shortly after finishing at UCO, I completed my Masters in Drama at the University of Chester. I learned new techniques to enhance my performing ability, and explored work from other performers to enhance my own approach.
While at Chester, I was an ensemble member in the stage showing of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ at [Chester theatre] Storyhouse from December 2018 to January 2019. I also applied my knowledge of Roald Dahl as a children’s storyteller to my own scripted performance, exploring the concepts of Autism and overcoming the obstacles through educational learning and development.
I current work as an SEND Support Worker at Bridge College, Manchester.
I support students and help to create a safe, inclusive and functional learning environment for all. Part of my job is to equip students with the learning resources they require, including stationery, sensory items and objects of reference.
I love working with professionals within their specialist subject and making friends for life.
I’ve also enjoyed learning Makaton, as it’s a great method of communication for anyone to learn and can be a useful skill for non-verbal individuals.
In this job, you learn something new every day. Working in SEND is such a rewarding experience.
I wish you every luck in the world – and do not think this is the end, it’s just the beginning. You have the power to go that extra mile.
The Careers department and your tutors can help you find your next steps. As a drama teacher and performer, education is like a mountain – Keep on climbing to reach the top!
University Campus Oldham will always have a place in my heart and I’m proud to call it ‘home’. I’ve made so many wonderful memories and great friends from my time there.
