Here she shares more about why University Campus Oldham was the right choice for her.
The main reason Tasnim chose to study at UCO was its understanding of mature students’ unique circumstances and required support. She explains;
“I’d wanted to pursue a counselling degree for a while, but had my two young children to consider: especially my son, who has complex needs. UCO was perfect for me – I could study full-time on a course that offered exactly what I was looking for – without the added stress of commuting and losing time with my children.
“I was overjoyed that I could study in Oldham without having to compromise the things that are important to me.”
Tasnim is the first of her cohort to secure employment. Before graduating, she accepted an offer for a paid counsellor position at Trafford Rape Crisis – a service run by women for survivors of sexual violence. In this role, Tasnim will train as a trauma counsellor, then provide long-term counselling sessions to women from all backgrounds.
“I was honoured to have secured employment before graduation. It means the world to me that I will be doing impactful and potentially life-changing work. It really is a dream come true.”
With a range of career ambitions, Tasnim’s future looks bright – starting with continuing her studies to achieve honours, Masters, and maybe a PhD.
“In time, I also intend to start my own private practice where I can manage a caseload while continuing with further studies and work within non-profit organisations that do amazing work for the community. I’m also considering becoming a university lecturer myself, as I have seen first-hand the difference a good teacher can make.”
Neil Dickson, Course Leader for Counselling & Psychotherapy, says:
“Tasnim is an exceptional student who has diligently worked to achieve a distinction in her FdSc Counselling & Psychotherapeutic Skills. She has demonstrated fantastic counselling skills within her client work, which has led to extremely positive feedback from her clients, placement managers and supervisors. I am incredibly proud of everything Tasnim has achieved, and I wish her all of the best in her new and exciting career in Counselling.”
Tasnim’s advice to aspiring counselling students is simple – take the leap, especially if you’re a mature student.
“Some think it’s too late to pursue higher education because of intersectional factors or individual responsibilities and circumstances. We cannot let societal structures or dominant cultural norms hold us back from achieving our dreams. I am now in a position where I can use my voice to create positive changes in the world, and uplift and support others, all because I took the leap.
“At UCO, you are part of a community that supports and celebrates you for who you are. I’m excited to see what the future holds, and above all I am incredibly grateful that UCO gave me the opportunity to achieve my biggest dream.”
