Higher Technical Qualifications: Become industry-ready

HTQs are new and existing level 4 and level 5 qualifications that have gained approval from the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) to be accredited as HTQs. This means they’ve been quality-marked by IfATE as meeting employer-led occupational standards.

What is a Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ)?

In a nutshell, HTQs have been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses, so that students gain the specific training, knowledge and skills required for their chosen career.

The curriculum for each HTQ has been created to reflect what employers have said they need from their future employees. This makes them a high-quality alternative to other routes, such as apprenticeships, traineeships or standard bachelor’s degrees.

What type of qualifications are HTQs?

A HTQ in itself is not a qualification; it’s an accreditation or quality mark. There are different types of qualifications that can be accredited as an HTQ, such as:

  • Higher National Diplomas (HND)
  • Higher National Certificates (HNC)
  • Foundation degrees
  • Higher education certificates
  • Higher education diplomas

Not all diplomas, certificates and foundation degrees are approved HTQs, so make sure you look out for the HTQ logo.

Why study a HTQ at UCO?

A HTQ is a nationally-recognised and high-quality route for those looking for in-demand job roles. IfATE describes them as ‘prestigious’ qualifications that ‘meet employer needs’.

  • Courses are created in partnership with industry, so you know you’re developing the knowledge and skills employers are looking for.
  • HTQs are classroom-based, but aim to be more practical, with skills developed through workshops, industry equipment or work experience.
  • HTQs are suitable whether you’re just starting out or looking to upskill and retrain.
  • Most courses take one to two years to complete and are often delivered full-time or part-time.
  • HTQs are based on the same occupational standards as higher-level apprenticeships but don’t require employment as an apprentice.
  • University Campus Oldham is among the first providers to offer HTQs, delivered by industry experts.

UCO excels in providing a close-knit and supportive learning environment, centred around one-to-one and personalised support.

We have a strong track record of high-achieving students and studying at a higher level locally provides significant savings on costs such as accommodation and travel. In the latest National Student Survey (NSS), University Campus Oldham received positive student feedback above the England sector average across all seven category themes, including teaching, academic support, learning resources and student voice.
