HND Art and Design (Textiles)

Our HND in Textiles will build on and broaden your techniques and processes in textile design, utilising media, materials and techniques to understand textile construction and print.

You will be encouraged and guided to develop your own practice by combining practical skills, design development and the awareness of its application within the creative industries. You will build a portfolio showcasing your skills and ideas in preparation for a career in this growing sector.

Placements and work experience

The course has been developed to meet the needs of industry and the curriculum has been planned to reflect working practices. Contact with employers is a key part of this, including live briefs, industry seminars and conferences.

Students are encouraged to seek placement work to enhance their employability and are supported by a dedicated HE Careers & Graduate Outcomes Officer.

Teaching and assessment methods

Teaching consists of lectures and seminars, workshops and tutorials. These are designed to build autonomous and independent learning facilitating development of academic skills, experiences and techniques.

Live briefs and visits enable students to engage with industry and employers. Assessment is through coursework and portfolio building.

Facilities particular to the course

The Creative courses at UCO all benefit from access to our Mac and PC Suites. The department has a laser cutter, 3D printers, large format digital printers, motion capture suits and VR technology to support a wide range of digital processes. In addition, Fashion, Graphic Design and Illustration students have the use of screen-printing facilities and presses in our specialist printmaking studio.

Entry onto the course will be via a successful interview,
A typical profile for a student who has recently been in education would consist of:

  • GCSE English and Maths grades at C/4 or above, or equivalent Level 2 qualifications
  • HNC in a related subject

Mature students may present a more varied profile of achievement that is likely to include extensive work experience (paid and/or unpaid) and/or achievement of a range of professional qualifications in their work sector.
