The BSc (Hons) Health & Social Care Top-up is designed for people who have completed an FdA or equivalent in a subject related to Health & Social Care and who wish to progress to a higher level. This course is aimed at people who are interested in pursuing a career working in the Health & Social Care sector. With this top up degree, you can increase the skills required to work in adult social care services, hospitals, children’s services and other related occupations within the private, public and voluntary sector.
Students will study a range of subjects which will provide the basis for a future career in areas relevant to health and social care. The course provides flexibility, with a number of career choice options available. The main topic areas covered within this programme are research skills and critical enquiry skills, health promotion, mentoring and supervision skills, safeguarding, self-management and leadership skills. You can select topics that you are interested in when undertaking a Practice Project to support you to develop your independent critical thinking skills and problem solve effectively. This will inspire you to pursue your particular interests and areas of practice.
PW3002 Practice Based Research
This module aims to facilitate the student in consolidating knowledge gained in previous study and provides an opportunity for them to utilise this, along with new knowledge, to explore areas of health and social care that would benefit from development. This will be a literature-based project and the student will work independently, supported by a supervisor, to devise strategies to address a specific issue in their area of practice. The student’s learning is extended to addressing health and social care issues related to practice. It will allow the student to demonstrate their ability to undertake a review of their literature and defend their methodology in undertaking a literature review.
This module requires the student to critically appraise the issues, policies and underpinning theory relating to the safeguarding of vulnerable adults and children. Students will gain knowledge relating to collaborative working practices within the arena of safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.
NU3268 Developing Leadership Skills
The aim of the module is to provide students with the opportunity to explore the concept of leadership within health and social care services. Students will develop a range of leadership skills to meet current and future demands of complex health and social care organisations.
HS3705 Drugs, Health and Society
This module will develop students understanding of the complex nature of substance use and misuse in society and of the effects of substance misuse on the individual, the community and society as a whole. The module will enable students to locate substance misuse within a Public Health and Primary Health Care framework and to apply social science principles to the subject area.
PZ3026 Promoting Healthy Lifestyle Choices
To provide the student with an appropriate level of knowledge, understanding and skill to be able to critically evaluate the evidence base to facilitate individuals to change their behaviour and promote healthy lifestyle choices with both individuals
and particular at risk groups. This module also aims to engage with local community agencies within the Health Social and Voluntary Sector.
You will benefit from our schedule of visiting vocational speakers from the sector and trips to museums and galleries which may support modules within the programme.
You will be encouraged to maintain your professional experience, which will serve as a relevant source of practice-based knowledge to support your academic and professional development within the programme by drawing on your experiences in the workplace in order to maximise learning opportunities and discuss these experiences within a group setting.
Career options include probation service, management, paramedic, race relations officer, mental health advocate and related occupations. Graduates can apply for postgraduate courses in nursing, social work, mental health, care management, probation, advocacy and a diverse range of related occupations.
Teaching and learning is delivered through seminars, group work, practical experience and lectures, e-learning support, individual and group tutorials.
