University partners herald new era for University Campus Oldham

University Campus Oldham is about to enter a new era with the announcement of two new university partnerships. Oldham’s own Higher Education institution was established over a decade ago to raise aspirations and equip local residents with the knowledge and skills necessary to compete for careers in growth sectors in Oldham and Greater Manchester. Over 500 students are based at the University Way campus, mostly studying at Foundation Degree and Honours Degree levels.

The two partnerships are to be established with world class universities, University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and Sheffield Hallam University (SHU).

UCLan has been confirmed as an official partner while there is an agreement in principle to establish a partnership with SHU. It is anticipated this agreement will be finalised by the end of March 2017.

Both work extensively in partnership with colleges to support local participation in HE and both have an excellent reputations in university sector. UCO students will benefit from a comparable experience to those based at the universities’ own campuses and can take advantage of a wide range of university facilities in addition to those available at UCO.

Helen Mathers, Vice Principal HE and Higher Skills, University Campus Oldham said “I am delighted to announce these partnerships. It means that Oldham residents will have the opportunity to access both universities’ highly regarded programmes locally. Our vocational degrees are aligned with career opportunities in Oldham and Greater Manchester. We are committed to being a key partner in the renaissance of Oldham and Greater Manchester by substantially increasing the take-up of higher education in the town.”

Mrs Mathers continued “A university education is a life changing experience and UCO has a lot to offer. I would encourage those considering Higher Education to call in and see us. There is still time to make an application to start in September 2017. Enquirers can call us on 0161 344 8800, email or call in person to our campus on University Way. As well as high academic standards, we are proud of the level of support we offer our students to help them succeed. The staff in our unique Academic Success Centre can help to strengthen and develop study skills and guide students to make the transition to working at degree level.”

Tim Steele, Executive Director of International Strategy and Partnerships at UCLan, said: “The University of Central Lancashire is delighted to welcome University Campus Oldham as an official partner of UCLan. We have a long history and experience of developing educational partnerships with institutions in the North West, further afield in the United Kingdom and around the world. We are very much looking forward to working closely with the academic community at UCO as we start on a long and mutually beneficial partnership, providing students the opportunity to obtain a UCLan award locally.”

Peter Grover, Head of Education Partnerships at Sheffield Hallam University, said: "We are excited about this developing partnership and are looking forward to working with University Campus Oldham.

"The partnership aims to support the regional development agenda by offering courses in key sectors and encouraging young people from a wider range of backgrounds into higher education.

"It is a wonderful opportunity for learners in Oldham and the surrounding areas to be able to receive a quality university education and have access to the excellent support on offer from one of Britain's largest universities - while staying close to home."

An additional provider of undergraduate and postgraduate business education is also due to be announced as University Campus Oldham’s next university partner.
