Welcome to the University Campus Oldham (UCO) and welcome to the study of BA (Hons) Sports Coaching (Top up). In conjunction with the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) it is our aim to provide you with an interesting and challenging study programme which will enrich your learning experience and help you succeed in your chosen career.

The BA (Hons) Sports Coaching (Top up) Course is designed to ensure that you cover a broad range of modules, which will equip you for employment within the sports coaching industry. The programme offers modules, which combine a range of theoretical and practical elements designed to provide you with the skills needed in the workplace, as well as the academic rigour appropriate to a Higher Education programme. Today, potential employers are looking for people who have not only good degree results but also wider abilities.

At the end of the course, if successful, you will achieve a BA (Hons) Sports Coaching (Top up), awarded by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

Course Content
Coaching Performance and Development

This module aims to develop the principles, practices and skills learned on the degree course and apply them to a variety of coaching scenarios. The module content allows the student to enter into critical discussion regarding issues that affect the development of athletes and aims to equip them with the techniques and strategies available to facilitate performance improvements. Issues such as developing the athlete’s decision making and understanding lifestyle factors that impact on performance.

Coaching in the Community

The aim of the module is to provide opportunities for student to explore and analyse the value and contribution that sport can make to broader social objectives such as health and health education, safer communities and regeneration. The module builds upon previous learning by drawing upon theory, case studies and personal experience that will help students analyse the impact of sport for development from a socio-political perspective. There will be a component of applied practicals to help develop an appreciation of the role physical activity in a community context and to reinforce learning.

Single Research Project

The aims of the module are to offer you the opportunity to conduct a major piece of independent literature-based research. It is expected that you will develop management skills; achieve a measure of independence; integrate different aspects of the course; define clearly a problem to be solved. Students will be expected to extract relevant material from a literature survey and synthesise all information.

Industry Based Experience

Enable students to use critical reflection as a learning tool to articulate learning from experience in an industry setting relevant to their programme of study. To critically evaluate their employability needs in relation to the job market and identify any skills gap areas for future development

Professional Academic Development and Research

This module aims to develop a range of academic and vocational skills in students which may enable them to represent themselves and their achievements in a professional manner in the work place. The module aims to consolidate upon previous investigative study through critical analysis of themselves within the coaching and development sector. The module also aims to provide opportunities for students to further develop transferable skills for their future.

Coaching Process for Specific Populations

The module aims to demonstrate the potential variation in sports participants, and how these variations affect the coaching and training of the participants. The module focuses on how coaching can be adapted to meet the needs of people in ‘special populations’ as may be delineated by for example; physical disabilities, syndromes and other mental social or behavioural conditions including children, the elderly and the female athlete.


Placements and Work Experience

The Sports Coaching programme has been designed to ensure that graduates have the skills and knowledge that will make them employable and make a contribution to the profession of Sports Coaching.

What careers can the course lead to?

This Sports Coaching course is designed to prepare you for a career in sports coaching in a variety of roles that could include: participant coach, school coach, community coach or working within the sports development industry. Alternatively graduates will be provided with the skills that will allow them to work within the health and fitness industry, strength and conditioning, performance analysis or further study as a physical education teacher.

Higher Education is concerned not only with enhancing your subject knowledge and skills but also with your personal development. Higher Education courses encourage you to take responsibility for your own learning and to become more independent in your academic work. Lectures, tutorials and practical sessions are important and you should attend all of them, but your success depends on the amount of time you devote to further independent study and background reading. In the Sports Coaching Programme, a wide variety of teaching methods and learning environments are utilised to ensure learners are provided with opportunities to apply theoretical concepts in applied contexts throughout the programme.
