Students without qualifications which are on this list may still qualify for entry.  Mature students with relevant industrial experience, may qualify for entry.  Applications from people with relevant work or life experience and/or non-standard qualifications who can demonstrate the ability to copy with and benefit from foundation degree studies are welcome.

Welcome to the University Campus Oldham (UCO) and welcome to the study of Foundation Degree Sports Coaching. In conjunction with the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) it is our aim to provide you with an interesting and challenging study programme which will enrich your learning experience and help you succeed in your chosen career or further study.

The Foundation Degree Sports Coaching course is designed to ensure that you cover a broad range of modules, which will equip you for employment within the sports coaching industry. The programme offers modules, which combine a range of theoretical and practical elements designed to provide you with the skills needed in the workplace, as well as the academic rigour appropriate to a Higher Education programme. Today, potential employers are looking for people who have not only good degree results but also wider abilities. Opportunities exist at UCO to develop all sorts of skills and I hope that during your time here you will participate fully in all its activities. At the end of the day the success of these activities depends on the input from our students and UCO encourages you to offer your support and participation in order to provide a vibrant community of students. At the end of the course, if successful, you will achieve an FdSc Sports Coaching, awarded by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

Course Content - Year 1

Introduction to Sport and Exercise Psychology

This module is designed to introduce the student to the relationship between psychological factors and participation and performance in sports. Increased interest in sport and exercise science through both practical and financial terms has brought about a greater requirement for the athlete to be aware of all aspects for producing performance behavioural change. The use of psychological skills training is becoming increasingly prevalent in the field of sports performance. Players ranging from the beginner/amateur to the most senior professional have become more conscious of the requirement for psychological factors to be included in their game plan.

Personal and Vocational Development in Sport

This module will develop key academic skills in order to better bridge the gap from school/college to university; from more dependent to more independent modes of learning. These skills will be developed in the ‘sport and leisure’ context in conjunction with other Year 1 modules and will underpin subsequent years of study.

Essentials of Training and Conditioning

The module will introduce students to the scientific principles, concepts, and theories of resistance training and conditioning as well as their practical applications to athletic performance. Students will review the key components of effective strength and conditioning development, through a variety of practical experiences. The module applies specific conditioning practices to the enhancement of performance, and utilises the key performance indicators outlined by the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the UK Strength and Conditioning Association.

Sports Events

This module is about understanding the planning and organisation of sporting events. Special events in the sports industry take place in a wide variety of contexts (i.e. different sports/activities). Likewise there are many different types of events that are organised by sports managers (i.e. individual/team sports tournaments and major/minor events). Regardless of the size and scope of the event there are considerable logistical elements and potential problems which must be considered in the planning process. The content of this module provides candidates with a sound theoretical knowledge of event planning and management, which can be applied to the task of planning/managing and funding/resourcing a wide variety of types and contexts of sporting events.

Coaching Toolkit
The module aim is to ensure learners can independently demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the coaching process and the many elements that contribute to effective and safe coaching practice, taking into consideration the wide and varied context of sport in the UK.

Course Content - Year 2

Research Project

The aim of this module is to develop the ability of students in undertaking research in an academic and vocational context. The module focuses on preparing students for project/dissertation work as well as investigative and report writing within a working environment.

Talent ID and Pathways

The aim of this module is to provide the student with an understanding of performance pathways developed by organisations to develop players to their full potential. The module will also examine the support mechanisms which aid in this development of players

Work Placement

This module aims to provide students with and gain credit for experiential learning opportunities within the sports and leisure industry. To provide students with the opportunity to undertake personal self-development and the acquisition of key skills within the workplace environment. To provide a setting where theory and practice can be integrated within the context of the sport and leisure industry. To provide an environment where students are required to evaluate contemporary issues within the sport and leisure industry.

Analysing and Improving Performance

To provide a framework where sports coaches can apply the coaching process and develop techniques to evaluate sports performance, particularly technical and tactical analysis. This will include a review of pertinent scientific elements of training/performance.

The Reflective Coach

This module aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop their coaching competencies and confidence. It will encourage experimentation within the coaching process and stimulate, facilitate and develop an ongoing and collaborative reflective process both ‘in’, ‘on’ and ‘for’ action. The module aims to develop innovative and adaptable coaches who are better able to justify the ‘why’ for their coaching practice in accordance with the ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘when’ and ‘how’ of their delivery.

Placements and Work Experience

As a student undertaking this course, you are bound by the Code of Practice for Sports Coaches as specified by sports coach UK and subject to the procedure for the consideration of Fitness to Practise. You will also be given the opportunity and encouraged to engage in vocationally relevant qualifications.

Your course has been designed with employability learning integrated into it. Where appropriate the development of employability skills is included in course aims, module learning outcomes and assessment. In addition, the Personal and Vocational Development for Sport and Work Placement modules provide opportunity for employer engagement.

What careers can the course lead to?

This Sports Coaching course is designed to prepare you for a career in sports coaching in a variety of roles that could include: multi sports coaching, fitness training, nutritional adviser, personal training, activity leadership or working within the sports development industry. Alternatively, graduates will have the opportunity to progress onto the BA (Hons) Sports Coaching (Top up) degree.

Teaching and Assessment methods

Higher Education is concerned not only with enhancing your subject knowledge and skills but also with your personal development. Higher Education courses encourage you to take responsibility for your own learning and to become more independent in your academic work. Lectures, tutorials and practical sessions are important and you should attend all of them, but your success depends on the amount of time you devote to further independent study and background reading. In the Sports Coaching Programme, a wide variety of teaching methods and learning environments are utilised to ensure learners are provided with opportunities to apply theoretical concepts in applied contexts throughout the programme.
