Entry Requirements

One A Level or Level 3 qualification in a relevant creative subject. It is recommended that students have a minimum of GCSE grade 4 or grade C (or an equivalent Level 2 qualification) in both English and Maths.

All applicants will be auditioned and interviewed.

The interview process is to enable interviewing staff to ascertain interest and potential and to ensure that the applicant fully understands the nature of the course and the demands it will make on them.

Audition Requirements and Assessment Criteria – Applicants are asked to perform a two-minute audition piece chosen from a range of performance disciplines (e.g. monologue, movement piece, improvisation, song) demonstrating the students’ performative abilities.

In the audition, the Admissions Tutor will be looking for evidence of the applicant’s abilities within the following areas where applicable:

  • Performance skills including use of voice and physicality.
  • Effective communication.
  • An ability to respond to direction if required.

The UAL Level 4 Professional Diploma in Performance is a one year course designed to provide you with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to progress into Higher Education or Conservatoire training. The skills developed throughout the qualification will also support you if you are thinking of progressing directly into employment in the creative industries.

You will be provided with opportunities to stretch and refine your practical skills whilst identifying your personal interests and area of expertise. This qualification is for those wanting to pursue a career in the creative arts to explore, develop and test your creativity. You will be provided with a supportive transition into either higher-level training or employment.

The qualification is made up of three mandatory units.

Unit 1: Applied Professional Practice

Working in our studios, performance venues, and with our Industry Partners, you will learn what it is like to work in a professional environment within the performance industry. You will start to explore your own professional development through the learning of skills and the gaining of experience.

Unit 2: Specialist Performance Technique

Taking part in a number of performance activities you will develop performance techniques across a range of performance styles and contextual periods. You will start to develop professional standards in both rehearsal and performance. You will develop your analytical skills through the exploration of your own practice as well as considering the work of significant practitioners throughout history.

Unit 3: Specialist Performance Project

You will choose, design, rehearse and perform in your own specialist performance project. You will design your own project which draws on your experiences and knowledge developed in units 1 and 2.

Placements and employability:

Students are encouraged and supported in looking for relevant work experience, and in making contact with industry specialists offering advice, mentoring or employment opportunities.

What can the course lead to?

The course prepares you for higher education courses or conservatoire training. You will also develop performance skills appropriate for the creative industries helping you to gain employment or self-employment. Potential career options include performer / actor, creative practitioner, director, a performance writer, or a producer. With further qualifications this could lead to a career in teaching or drama therapy.

Teaching and Assessment Methods

This is a highly practical course which includes specialist training, workshops and performance opportunities alongside some theory-based classes. You will work with highly trained tutors, guest lecturers and our industry partners to experience the professional world of performance and the creative industries.

Facilities Particular to the Course

You will work in a number of highly specialised performance studios and within two performance venues (The Grange Theatre and UCO Performance Studio).
