Entry Requirements

Normally 64 UCAS tariff points

Normally Maths and English GCSE at Grade C or above or equivalent Level 2 qualification (i.e. Key Skills or Functional Skills). All applicants will be interviewed and may be subject to diagnostic tests.

Non Standard Entry Requirements: 
Applicants who do not have the qualifications specified above, but who hold alternative qualifications and/or experience demonstrating appropriate knowledge and skills at Level 3, may be admitted to the programme following an interview with the Course Leader or nominated member of the Faculty team. For example, applicants may have been working in a relevant role in an appropriate organisation on an employed or voluntary basis, and therefore may have applicable skills and knowledge for entry. Likewise, there may be applicants who are clearly suitable for entry and who may be operating at a level of written communications that is just below Level 3; these applicants would not be excluded but would be given additional learning support so that they can function at the required levels early in the programme.

The financial and professional services sector is one of the largest growth areas in the UK Economy with a current skills gap at Level 4 and above. Despite this there are currently only a relatively small number of Higher Education institutions currently offering a foundation degree. The FdA Accounting and Financial Services is an exciting forward looking course with topical modules which enliven the core subjects and place these in a context which integrates employability skills, finance and business theory, together with specialism in a rapidly growing  employment sector.

The development of work based skills is a key element of this foundation degree. On completion you will be able to demonstrate a set of attributes which will enable you to function successfully in your chosen field of employment. This course offers a range and depth of core subjects which give you great flexibility for further progression. The modules have been developed to mirror the requirements of professional bodies. You may choose to progress to further professional studies in, for example, accounting or to progress to a top-up third year to achieve an Honours degree or enter the workplace in a range of financial service specialisms.

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching and Learning
The teaching and learning approaches across this programme build on your basic Level 3 skills and knowledge, developing content to expand this in conjunction with developing your professional and employability skills. A variety of methods will be used to deliver course content. These may include lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions and workshops with industry experts and guest lectures. The common theme will be the emphasis on professional practice and application of taught theory to the workplace. Initially, you will undertake some independent study guided by your tutor. As you progress through the course you will be expected to develop your own approach to research and apply this to areas of specific interest to you.

You will be assessed on your skills, knowledge and ability to apply theory to practice in work based contexts. Assessments will include presentations, case studies, group work, essays and reports and also examinations.

We recognise that examinations can sometimes be a barrier to student success. However, the structured approach in this course will allow you to build confidence in your examination techniques. This will equip you with the skills to progress to professional body examinations e.g. CCAB accountancy bodies.

After The Course

This programme offers the flexibility to pursue a wide range of potential employment opportunities and/or further study – either professional or academic. There is a good basic grounding in business, finance and management areas which will allow you to explore more generalist careers. However, this programme also includes some exciting content, e.g. financial crime, ethical frameworks, including Islamic banking and corporate social responsibility which is topical and opens up areas for further specialisation. Completion of this programme will therefore allow you to explore potential areas you may not have previously considered. Financial and professional services is, after all, the largest employment growth area in the UK and is a priority for the Greater Manchester area. Some of the areas you may consider include:
